The Banaras Hindu University is an internationally reputed university situated in Varanasi Uttar Pradesh. It is the largest residential University in Asia . This University is recognized and funded by UGC. The University was founded by great nationalist leader Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya in the year 1916 with the assistance of Mrs Annie Besant. The university comprises 3 institutes, 4 inter- disciplinary centers, 124 departments and 6 centers of advanced studies. Every year about 15000 students enrolled in the university from all over India and abroad. Over a period of time it has developed into one of the greatest learning centers for higher studies including engineering, science, linguistics, law and medicine.
The Banaras Hindu University has a sprawling campus, spanning across 1300 acres. The building is an architectural delight .There is another campus of Banaras University at Barkachha in Mirzapur District spreads in 2700acres.The University also has 6 centers of advance studies, 10 departments under special assistance programme and a large number of specialized Research Centers. There are four degree collages that are affiliated to BHU The university also has a medical collage and an engineering institute. Besides imparting education the university also has a well developed sports infrastructure, playgrounds, a big auditorium and many more facilities for the benefit of students. The university has its own Printing Press, Publication Cell, subsidized Canteens, Employment and information Bureau, Security, etc.
