Bharat Kala Bhavan is the largest university museum located inside the campus of Benaras Hindu University. It displays India’s heritage and preserved the past of our country. The museum was established in the year 1920 A.D Its first honorary chairman was noble prize winner poet Rabindranath Tagore. The credit for its international fame and development goes to Padmavibhushan Late Rai Krishnadasa a renowned Hindi writer and a pioneer among the Indian art historians. It is an art and architecture museum and can be divided into few important sections such as Mahamana Malaviya gallery, Nicholas Roerich gallery, Chhavi Gallery, sculpture gallery, Nidhi gallery, sculpture gallery, archaeological gallery, decorative art gallery which is like a treasure house. One can even find a large number of Buddhist and Hindu sculptures, paintings and other miniatures of archaeological relevance.
In the main hall of this museum there is a figure of a man standing on one leg and one hand on his hip and lifting a mass of stone above his head, with one hand. Basically it is said to be the figure of Lord Krishna, lifting Mount Govardhana. The museum also has a great collection of paintings from the mughal courts and other major kingdoms of that period. Other objects that attract the visitor to this museum are pottery, metal crafts , ivory goods , jewellery ,bronze images , terracotta beads and rare collection of Gujrati , Rajasthani and Pahari miniature paintings , textiles and literary material.
