Varanasi is quite famously known as the city of temples", "the holy city of India", "the religious capital of India", "the city of lights", and "the city of learning.
Varanasi is located on the west bank of the River Ganges in Uttar Pradesh, India. It is popularly also known as Banaras, Benrares or Kashi. It is a city regarded holy and religious by Hindu, Buddhist and Jains alike. People apart from being spiritual and religious are also exponents of arts, crafts literature, Vedic philosophy, music and architecture. People oh Hindu origin believe that if a person dies and is cremated on the Banks of River Ganges or if his ashes are submerged in the pious waters of the Ganges he attains salvation and freedom from the cycle of life and birth. Varanasi being the city of religion is lively with some festival or the other throughout the year. Also when the festivals are not taking place it is alive with the Fairs and ‘Melas’. There is never a point in the year when Varanasi is not alive. All the festivals are celebrated with fun and frolic almost symbolic of celebration of life itself.
Bharat Milap
Bharat Milap is a significant festival of Kashi and is held in October/November. Bharat Milap is celebrated in honor of Lord Ram's return to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and his reunion with Bharat his younger brother. The festival signifies the victory of good over evil. Lord Ram is the main protagonist of Tulsidas' Ramcharitamanas. It is also believed that Tulsidas wrote this epic in Varanasi.
The Bharat Milap festival is celebrated on the day right after Dussehra. The Bharat Milap festivities are celebrated at Nati Imli, Varanasi. The people of Varanasi celebrate Bharat Milap with great elaboration and devotion and it is one of the biggest celebrations at Varanasi. People gather in numbers to see the parade of Lord Ram and the re union of the brother. People garland Lord Ram and his brothers and pay their reverence by putting tikkas. The Kashi Naresh also attends the festival and the procession.
