The spectacular Harish Chandra Ghat is also the oldest Ghat located in Varanasi city. The name of this consecrated Ghat was kept after the then mythological King Harish Chandra, who once upon a time worked here at the funeral ground for safeguarding the truth and charity. Rather it is also whispered that the deities rewarded him for his determination, honesty and charity and reinstated his lost kingdom and his deceased son to him. More to the point, there is another cremation Ghat called the Manikarnika Ghat which is every now and then mentioned as Adi Manikarnika (the original creation ground). Owing to be known as the notable Hindu Ghat, Hindus from far-flung areas bring the dead bodies of their closed ones to the Harish Chandra Ghat to cremate them as it is believed that the bodies which are cremated here get salvation or "moksha". Last of all, a very noteworthy point about this Harish Chandra Ghat of Varanasi city is that it has been modernized to some extent since 1980's, when an electric crematorium was started here.
