It becomes mandatory for the travelers to pay a visit to Sarnath during their trip to Varanasi. It is positioned at the distance of 10kms on the north-east direction in Banaras and was the one and only place which was chosen by Lord Buddha to deliver his first lecture. You will be amazed to know that the famed Mantra, 'Buddham Sharanam Gachhami', forms its foundation to Sarnath. The day Lord Buddha was going to die, he incorporated Sarnath together with Bodh Gaya, Lumbini, and Kushinagar as the four pilgrimage spots, which he assumed to be sanctified to his supporters. Since then, Sarnath emerged as one of the most hallowed places for those who practice Buddhism and people who follow Jainism also come here frequently with great respect and worship as the 11th Jain Tirathankar, Shreyansanath was born in a village called Singhpur which is situated at the distance of 1km from Sarnath near Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India.
The terrain of Sarnath in Benaras is packed out with innumerable Buddhist monuments and other compositions which are not only captivating but their historical set-up are also very enlightening. The most enthralling Buddhist edifices contain the Chaukhandi stupa, the Dhamekha stupa, monasteries and some places of worship that belong to the different schools of Buddhism from China, Thailand, Japan, Burma and the list is just immeasurable. Additionally, the well-known Indian Buddhist society called Mahabodhi Society takes care of a park which is established in the region of the Buddha temple and the en suite Mahabodhi Temple inside the park has a tooth artifact of the Buddha.
Before we finish, also note that the description of Sarnath located close to Banaras city also bring to light many ancient ruins, scores of Buddhist structures which were constructed between 3rd century BC and the 11th century AD and the truth that the celebrated Ashoka pillar of Sarnath is considered to be National Emblem of India. Last but not least, in current times, Sarnath gives the most expansive remnants in the middle of places on the Buddhist trail. So, we hope that you will not miss out on Sarnath during your next Varanasi travel.
