Sanskrit is one of the ancient languages in the world . It is an Indo Aryan Language. It is one of the sacred language in Hinduism and Buddhism and an official language in India .Sanskrit is not only declared as the classical language but is a great repository of age old Indian cultural Heritage. It continues to be widely used as a ceremonial language in Hindu religious rituals in the forms of hymns and mantras. Varanasi has contributed a lot in the growth and development of this language. Since ancient time varanasi attracts many scholars, intellectuals and philosophers across the world and is a great centre of leaning this language. The Guru Shishya Parampara of Kashi has played a major role in this context. Over the period of time varanasi has produced some great scholars of this language and many great works of Sanskrit have been also penned at Varanasi.
Government Sanskrit College was the first college in Benaras which was established in the year 1791. It was a landmark college in India from where several notable teachers emerged. In 1958 it merged with Sampurnanand Sanskrit University. Over the period of time this university has played an important role in the development of this language through translations ,research , publications as well as cataloguing of manuscripts of cultural and spiritual literature such as Vedas, Vedanta , Puranas, Ayurveda , Astrology , Theology and sahitya etc. This university strikes a balance between ancient and modern oulook. by grooming up of new and talented scholars who are acquainted with this language with a modern perspective. This helps them to do the comparative studies which adds a new dimension to this language.
