Uttar Pradesh constitutes almost 90% of the carpet industry of India. Bhadohi, Mirzapur , and Agra belt produces maximum number of carpets of the country. The Iranian weavers were the originators of carpet weaving in Uttar Pradesh. Today Uttar Pradesh is one of the most important centers in silk carpet exports. Varanasi is renowned not only for its silk and brocade saris in the world but also for the carpets as well. Among these Bhadohi worth special mention as the livelihood of the people of this district and its 500 villages is entirely dependent on this industry. The carpets produced in Varanasi region are famous for there excellent design, unmatched quality and proves the genius of the traditional carpet weavers. Varanasi and its neighboring areas are the major carpet exporters from India. Hand tufted, Indo-Tibetan , Low Medium and High knotted carpets are the always in demand from this region.
The specialty of Bhadohi carpets is their unique style and affordability. The designs developed here include various tints of Taj Mahal in natural colours or Sirdar in subdued colour. These carpets have hand embossed or hand carved borders in rose-beige, honey ,ivory and Iraq green. Mostly bright colored pastel shades are used in these patterns. Nowadays, due to the trend of fusion this industry is also experimenting with various designs and patterns. The general design is a blend of Iranian, Moroccan, French and Turkmen patterns . Some of the famous designs are named after cities and provinces of Iran such as Sarough, Hamadan, Tabriz, Kashan, Isfahan, Khorasan. Handspun wool, silk carpet, silk flower carpet, soumak carpets, silk touch carpets, hand knotted carpets, floor carpets, tufted wool carpets and designer silk carpets etc. are some of the few attractive verities of the carpets produced by this region.
